the Evangelist,
and the Martyr was the preacher of Egypt, the
first pope of Alexandria, and one of the 70
disciples. He was martyred in A.D. 68, and was
buried in Baucalia Church in Alexandria.
In A.D. 829, some Venetians stole away the body
of St. Mark leaving the head. The holy head was
moved to many places to be eventually reposed at
St. Mark cathedral in Alexandria.
On the occasion of 19th . centenury anneversary
of St.Mark's martyrdom, in 1968 some relics of
St.Mark's Body were restored to Egypt, and are
lying under the main sanctuary of the new
Cathedral of St. Mark. |
